What are the chances I won’t die in Vancouver?
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008I am so unbelievably stoked for my mini vacation to the coast. I always get ridiculously excited before we go to Vancouver, and then when I get there I’m all…SO TIRED! CAN WE PLEASE JUST DO NOTHING…
This trip, like my earlier east coast foray, is going to be different and difficult. My diet. It is not exciting. When you can’t eat fish (I miss you sushi!) and MSG makes you feel like you’re going die (it found me again today and strangled me for the afternoon), what is the point in living???
For the 7.5 years I was a vegetarian-who-ate-fish, I didn’t really have much of a problem with my diet. A salmon fillet here, some sushi there, fish ‘n chips? Sure! But now I can’t even eat a tuna sandwich. My friends want to go for sushi… I guess I can eat a salad? And then they want to go for dim sum. Count me in! Just don’t let the MSG or the shrimp paste or the fish sauce anywhere near me. I’ll have a slab of tofu. Thanks.
It sucks. My friends are trying to kill me.
I love my diet now, for the most part. I’m probably eating healthier than I ever have. I like rocking the free-range bison every once in a while, but otherwise I’m living it up the real vegetarian way.
The stupid thing: I’ve already lost one epi-pen. So, someone out there is running around with a sharp vial of epinephrine with my name on it, ready to stab their (hopefully) anephylactically-shocked victim. That’s a good time! I’m being much more careful with my second $150 dose of medicine-that-I-need-to-keep-myself-alive-in-the-wild. I’m crossing my fingers that I won’t have to use it, ever. I know I’m going to find myself needing it someday soon though, and then it won’t be the $150 epi-pen bill that I’ll be choked about… it will be the $700 ambulance ride.
Such is life.
