i have a desk!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I have whined my way into the office. OUR office. Since we moved to this hole in the ground 3 years ago, I haven’t had a proper home for my ‘puters. Sure, I can internet in bed, on the couch, on planet futon, at the kitchen table… but it’s never felt quite right having the heat from the laptops radiating towards my genitals.

I whined, and complained, and at one particularly hormonal moment I actually cried. Now I have a cheap-ass Ikea desk named Flarke. Hi Flarke! and a spot as wide as Flarke (80 cm or 2.62 feet -whatever that means) in between a dresser (also cheap-ass Ikea) and a pile of plastic storage bins. Not the classiest joint, but I have room for my two laptops, my blackberry, a bottle of vitamin water, my much loved headphones (because I can only keep my minimalist set-up here if I promise to be QUIET.

I probably won’t last too long in here.

There are good reasons why I haven’t been “allowed” in the office before. I don’t know why I haven’t had a desk. I did, but for some reason I gave it away to some friends before I’d even set it up. Charitable, but stupid.

This may or may not mean a lot more of the blogging type stuff. I don’t really know.  I know it does mean that I’ll be less prone to reading e-mails and leaving people hanging. I’ve been really sucking like that.

Robin’s Egg Blue Hat or Blue Pokey Hat

I finished knitting a hat a while ago. In April - the perfect time to be knitting winter attire. I just sewed the over-sized button onto it today.

I tried to follow the pattern without going out and buying the proper sized needles - and I think I succeeded despite it turning out a little pointier than the recipe called for.

I’m making a second one soon, in a loverly purple color. It will be really hard not to want to make it in an earthier tone too. Argh!

See the pattern here or on Ravelry here

Not many people get as excited about buying things as I do. For me, it’s a sort of sick illness. The wire basket I bought for my bicycle a little earlier today? I am ecstatic over. The oversized button I bought to finish up a winter toque/tuque/touque (i checked)? Equally as ecstatic. Doesn’t matter the price, I’m happy regardless. I’m a consumer. A happy consumer.

I guess it’s ok.

A few days ago we took an evening off of mourning the alive and I dragged boy-bot off to the folk festival. It was pretty fun. The band that opened the festival was from Morocco. I would like to extract pieces of an article to describe the experience of hearing Jajouka.

Sharp, piercing blasts of raw flute power.

and

It excited many and proved to be entirely unpleasant to the ear for others.

Yeah. Count me in as a member of the latter group.

The Weakerthans, Aimee Mann, and Sam Roberts Band on the other hand were much, much more pleasant. Also, a much needed evening away from work and hospices.

This afternoon after I put in a few hours in the office, boy-bot and I went for a bike ride. I was hungry, so I stopped for a sandwich and boy-bot had a nap. We had a conversation. It went like this.

He: I think my brain is too tired to do much more than watch a movie tonight.
Me (hopefully): A romantic comedy?
He: Yep. Starring Genghis Khan.

Groan.

(I credit my archaeology degree in helping me know how to spell genghis properly)

I leave interwebs now.
